By some definitions, speculative fiction (spec-fi) is characterized as an umbrella description of the broad spectrum of science fiction and fantasy, but the term first appeared as a genre reference in in an editorial essay, On the Writing of Speculative Fiction, by the venerable sci-fi author, Robert A. Heinlein. The ISFDB is a community effort to catalog works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. It links together various types of bibliographic data: author bibliographies, publication bibliographies, award listings, magazine content listings, anthology and collection content listings, and forthcoming books.

Today Speculative Fiction covers practically the entire fantastic end of the Sliding Scale of Realistic Versus Fantastic, including Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror, and other, less well known genres.(In this genre, Just Here for Godzilla is in full effect.) However, there are many speculative fiction stories that fall on the border between genres, and others that may be completely unclassifiable. Thriller is a big genre, but if the book is a spec fiction thriller, it’s categorized by what make is speculative, not the thriller part. So for Dekker, some of his stories are supernatural, some are paranormal, some are fantasy. Three is a psychological thriller–no speculative elements in that one.

Altered Reality Magazine publishes speculative, genre fiction, and speculative poetry. We aim to be the best source of entertainment for those who enjoy either, or both, and we are delighted to present work by unknowns and top selling authors. Speculative Everything neatly and quietly dispels the myths, misunderstandings and simplifications surrounding speculative design. Of course, there will always be people who dismiss Dunne and Raby's work for being too arty, and, well, too speculative to be strictly design but if some of them ever read the book, i'm quite convinced that they.
